Formed in 2000 by Grace Mi-He Lee, Philadelphia-based GENGHIS Dance Company produces intimate, character-driven contemporary dance theater. Known for their original wit and dark humor, Lee's psychological comedies probe the flawed solutions that her protagonists devise in order to reconcile the chaotic nature of desire with their need for self control. These unapologetically entertaining narratives combine familiar elements from mainstream culture, such as Top 40 music and fairy tale archetypes, with a more ambiguous vision of human nature. Recently GENGHIS Dance Company was invited to join Kumquat Dance Collective, a project of Group Motion Dance Company that unites Group Motion, Rennie Harris Puremovement, and the Bald Mermaids in resource sharing and activity support.
