Retreats

Upcoming Group Motion retreats will be posted here! For ongoing updates, please join our mailing list.

Our retreats combine structures of improvisation, movement meditations, and contact as a way to discover and experience the language of dance. All retreats are an expansion on the Group Motion Friday Night Workshop, offering 3-8 day immersive environments for collective dance creativity, fun, and relaxation! Each retreat includes two daily sessions during the morning and evening, leaving the afternoons and nights open for exploration or whatever you wish! As always, NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Past Retreats

Arcosanti, AZ
Summer Retreat

Arcosanti is an experimental town that began construction in 1970 in central Arizona, 70 miles north of Phoenix, by Architect Paolo Soleri, using a concept he calls arcology (a portmanteau of architecture and ecology). Soleri started the town to demonstrate how urban conditions could be improved while minimizing the destructive impact on the earth.

Group Motion has been offering dance/movement retreats in Arcosanti for many years. Each week-long retreat includes two daily sessions; morning and evening, leaving the afternoons open for exploration, relaxation, and excursions into the beautiful landscapes of Arizona.

Group Motion invites you to join in the celebration of dance and music in this extraordinary community. Witness the visionary “Urban Laboratory” or Paolo Soleri’s Arcosanti, with architecture, nature and ecology in a harmonious balance. Dance in an outdoor theater on the edge of a beautiful canyon.

Usually held at the end of July or the beginning of August, the Arcosanti Retreat provides very affordable rooms and meals, and a climate that is comfortable because of its high desert location and the monsoon breezes which occur during this time of the year.

Sarasota, FL
Winter Retreat

Retreats in Sarasota typically happen the second week of January, and participants have seven days to discover, enjoy movement, be in the body, explore mindfulness, expression, communication, and dance with a community. Local residents are welcome to ‘drop-in’ for workshops.

Join us for daily morning and evening sessions of dance improvisations to live music, enjoy community meals together, and afternoons at the beach!

All sessions are held at the Fitness Center of the New College of Florida in Sarasota.

**All students from the New College of Florida come for FREE**

Claymont Society, WV

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Shenandoah Valley, the Claymont Society is an ideal setting for your next Group Motion Retreat. Situated on over 350 acres of beautiful scenery, Claymont is guaranteed to provide our community of dance makers with privacy and tranquility. The Society is run based on a philosophy of balance, harmony, and responsibility toward nature, which permeates all of the operational choices, such as a use of green technology. In addition, all meals are provided for participants made from fresh, local produce. Sessions will be held in the stunning Octagon (pictured below) and meditation rooms, and the surrounding flora, fauna, and woods can be explored during the afternoons and nights.
